We, Camaldolese Benedictine monks, are part of the great river of the monastic tradition that flows through all ages and spiritual paths, and has been nourished by the Benedictine Christian experience of Saint Benedict (sixth century), and renewed by the charism of Saint Romuald, an eleventh century Italian monk. In his existence he integrated what has become the characteristic of the living Camaldolese tradition: community, solitude, and evangelizing forms of life.
Incarnation Monastery is located in the Berkeley Hills just North of the University of California and the Graduate Theological Union. It is a quiet space and guests are welcome and encouraged to join in the prayer of the monastic community if they so desire. Each guest room, with its own balcony, enjoys a beautiful view of the whole San Francisco Bay. Adjacent to the Monastery is a lovely public park. Just a short distance away is the Graduate Theological Union, a remarkable ecumenical and inter-faith experience bonding nine seminaries (Baptist, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Dominican, Franciscan, Jesuit, Unitarian and interdenominational), together with Orthodox, Judaic, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist Institutes. The Chaplaincy Institute is also very close by.

Father Bede is a Camaldolese Benedictine monk and Prior of Incarnation Monastery in Berkeley, California. A monk for over 35 years, he was ordained to the presbyterate this Spring.
Prior to his arrival at Incarnation Monastery in 2016, Bede spent 20 years at the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur. During his tenure, he served as Formation Director, Spiritual Director, Oblate Chaplain, Council Member, Cellarer, and Vice-Prior. Before transferring to the Camaldolese, he was a monk of St. Benedict’s Abbey in Kansas for 15 years, where he held positions in formation and administration and was an associate professor of psychology at Benedictine College.
Father Arthur Poulin is a Camaldolese monk, priest, and artist living at Incarnation Monastery, Berkeley, California. A native of California, Father Arthur began his journey in the religious life with the Franciscans. After a number of years of fruitful service, he discerned a call to a more contemplative way of life and joined the Camaldolese in 1993. Father Arthur spent his early years with the Camaldolese at New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, CA. Over 20 years ago he transferred to our urban monastery in Berkeley, where he served for many years as guest master. Besides his theological training, he holds a degree in fine arts from Loyola University in Chicago. Father Arthur gives retreats and presentations on the spirituality of creativity and the creative process.
The community in Big Sur is situated in the rugged coastal mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Located on 899 acres at an elevation of 1300 feet, the Hermitage is surrounded by California chaparral, redwood, madrone, bay laurel, and an oak forest. The view is of both ocean and woods – a natural setting profoundly conducive to the contemplative way of life.
New Camaldoli Hermitage is a community of Roman Catholic monks whose life is dedicated to contemplation and prayer. We are a worshiping community, celebrating with our friends and guests the Liturgy of the Hours and the Holy Eucharist. Our monastic fellowship extends beyond the walls of this hermitage and embraces a large and inclusive community of oblates, persons of different walks of life who live the grace of their baptism in spiritual communion with the monks.
The Foreste Casentinesi are a magical place, dating back millennia, in which you can sample a piece of the ancient world. Upon its founding, Saint Romuald of Ravenna, began to reform a considerable number of convents and monasteries. The heart of this system is the first five cells where Romuald and his brothers went to follow the rules of the order: fasting, silence, and remaining in the cell.
Michael Fish, a Camaldolese monk and a member of the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur California, has been granted permission to transfer his stability to his Santa Cruz home, now an official “Camaldolese Residence” – St. Romuald’s Hermitage. While remaining under the authority of the Prior, Michael is now a separate, self supporting “mini-monastery.”
The Monastery of the Risen Christ is a Benedictine Monastery started as a mission from Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery, Pecos, NM, in 1987, by Fr. Ray Roh, O.S.B. Both communities have participated in the Catholic Charismatic renewal. The Monastery is located on a 40 acre ranch just outside San Luis Obispo. The Collection includes a nearly complete series of the Dove Leaflets, a book of the paintings of Fr. Stephen Odenbrett and miscellaneous articles and brochures.
